[edit] Objects, HowTos, Guides
ZyMOS, let me clarify our concepts and ask your opinion about naming of our articles.
Objects are hubs for Guides and Howtos, like extensions of Wikipedia pages. Objects can be abstract (Mathematics) or rather concrete (MediaWiki 1.11.0).
- Yes
Guides are abstract manuals organizing tasks that have to be done to accomplish a project.
- Im not sure if you are say this, but my understanding is. Guides are broad. like Guide to Linux. It conains more of and article structure with links to howtos and objects.
Howtos are exact procedures for very specific tasks.
- Yess
Right? So, Objects will contain lists. Guides will contain text. Howtos will contain lists, and that is how the Wikihowto is organized. If you want to write about some specific procedural knowledge in our system, you need to create a Guide, then write Howtos for it, or write a Howto and then link it to a guid or object.
It is all logical and good, but that requires much work in organizing pages.
And I have a need for freedom to write procedural information directly to the Object pages by writing a unique name and omiting "howto" or "guide" for simplicity reasons.
I mean, for me it is more tasteful, natural and straightforward just to think up a unique objectival topic (namespace) without writing "Howto:.. " or "Guide to..", and write very specific description of it's creation.
- I have though about using a namespace like Howto:, and Guide:, and it seems like a good idea, if the approach being used right now is not good.
I want to write "Derivation of Taylor's formula with residual term for multivariable function" or simply "Taylor's formula with residual term for multivariable function" ("how to create" is implied from the project name, why should I bother writing it) instead of "Howto derive generalized Taylor formula with residual term for multivariable function" ?
--Inyuki 17:04, 31 October 2007 (UTC) Do you think the word "Howto " or "Guide to" is always necessary?
- I understad what you are saying. Two reasons why I like them being used
- Search engins. If you seach howto xxxx we will be high on the list.
- It describs exactly what we are, a howto site.
- Derivation of Taylor's formula with residual term for multivariable function, could be a paper written for a doctoral thesis. Howto derive Taylor's formula with residual term for multivariable function. Makes it seem like you don't need to be a expert. It makes it more inviting for users who are searching for solutions to problems.
- Problems with this method. Sometimes using howto xxx for a howto type page doesn't read well. Guide to chip packages sounds much better than Howto identify chip packages. It really should be a howto, but its sounds awful. So far i havn't come up with a solution. Half these type pages are left as guides and half are converted to howtos. If they are left as guides then we will have little to distinguish guides from howtos and people will choose the prefix they want when creating them. If we correct them, then they will be much less popular. I have no solution to this....
- PS, have you checked out the portal system i started. Portal:Main, Tell me what you think.
ZyMOS 20:58, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hi. I see. I think a good alternative name for your page could be Identification of chip packages, because this is the THING that you can get by going through the howto. Maybe it's an overly-nounized form, but I believe it is easier to interpret for dumb search engines, because it does not have a sentence structure. It only has an intersection of sets "Identification * chip package", and the name such as "Howto identify chip packages" is essentially a question with a more complex grammar. The bottom line of what I want to say is, if something can be expressed in a concept, is it really necessary to make it more complex by writing a sentence?
- Of course, there are many cases when it is better to use the prefixes Howto: or Guide to:. So, my question was - "Do you think it will be okay if we allow the prefix-less articles?", because at least I have a preference to do so for the mentioned above simplicity reasons.
- Yes, I have checked your portal system. It is really good page to have for portals in one place. It may be more important in the future, when we'll have more people wanting to highlight the best material for their area of activity or expertise.
- I have one comment though. I believe that quality contents will give a better promotion effect than any efforts to organize our still scarce contents, and here is why:
- Quality contents will be linked by other people from quality websites.
- Only one such good link will stimulate a person to see for other stuff that is here. A person just finds a good source of information, and he or she remembers the website address if s/he thinks it is useful. I have such experience with several websites which I keep accessing until now. They were: http://dict.cn (Chinese-English dicationary), http://www.onelook.com (English-English dictionary), http://www.google.com, http://zdic.net (a Chinese-Chinese dictionary), http://www.ctrans.org/cjdic (Chinese-Japanese dictioanry), http://www.alc.co.jp (a Japanese-Japanese dictionary) etc.
- Keeping this in mind, recently I tried to create an experimental main page, which I find handy for myself. What do you think about it?

[edit] Center the logo and link to langages in Wikicomment
Hello, I tried to center the logo and links to langages in the first page of Wikicomment, using center and /center without success. May you help doing it for me ? Thanks for help.--Jbm747 19:23, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Story list
Hi, ZyMOS. Previously I mentioned that sometimes writing a story is a good way to explain howto type of information. Even though we do not have good examples of such stories yet, do you think it would be reasonable to create a pagelist with "Story" prefix? One thing that may be good about it, is attracting people to write accomplishment stories. A drawback is perhaps not very naturally sounding names (restriction of the word order to such as "Story of ..").
What do you think?

[edit] I need help
Hi ZyMOS,
I am currently working on a project and this site was the only one with any relevant info; however, I am still in the dark on a few things so is there anyway I can contact the person who posted this article. I have some how-to questions for him/her/it :oP
Thanks

[edit] FreePCB to circiutCam
Cool, you are just the guy I need then.
I am currently in college going into Computer Engineering. One of my professors/employers has given me the task of finding a suitable, inexpensive PCB layout program that is compatible with circuitCam for my fellow college students. FreePcb is an excellent choice, and the best part is that it is free. However, I have hit a road block. Whenever I use CircuitCam's wizard to import FreePCB's cam files it says it needs a tool/aperture/translation list in a .txt file format. I went to FreePCB's forum and entered in contact with allan, the author, he claims that the format is RS274X which should include an embedded list if I understand it correctly. So my big question is how do you get around that or is there a list that is available?
Thanks Derek, aka Bob

[edit] Forum usage
Hello, ZyMOS. Sorry for not responding for a while. Before you asked what I mean by saying 'because it takes much time to go through all sorts of branches of it'. I meant that usually forums have many branches, and especially when the connection to Wikia is slow, it is difficult or time consuming to review all it's pages to see what's new.
Anyhow, I just started using Forum:Main_discussion agreeing that it may be good to move the main page, but there is a problem that there is no 'Leave message' button, so one has to edit the whole page (which takes more time because the page is large and sometimes loads slowly).

[edit] Paper airplane
Hi, ZyMOS. I think your hack is a good thing for general improvement of the howto itself. I will make some other page, if I want to specifically compare the ways of explaining procedural knowledge...

[edit] Becomming a Wikimedia project...
Hi, ZyMOS.
Thank you for reminding the importance of becomming a Wikimedia project. I will give a more detailed write-up in my earliest convenience.
One interesting thing to notice, is that [www.howtopedia.org www.howtopedia.org] is too evolving, GDFL-ed. Many people will like their website's appearance, and I think it is important for us to make a similar presentation. I believe that in order to become a wikimedia project, we must target at diverse, and tested knowledge (not limiting ourselves to simple technologies, but encompassing everything), well, I think that is what we already do (except for not so much testing (???)).
I think we should host an example of our project's uncluttered version with few visitors, based on Wikihowto at Wikia.

[edit] recent discussion
Hi, ZyMOS.
I am sorry for the dalay to your responce. I would like to point out that I agree with your proposal of this year's goal, and becomming a Wikimedia project might just be the best way of achieving our goals.
I am having some trouble in actually contributing the Wikihowto and discussing it, since I am rarely online, mainly accessing the Internet from my mobile phone. It would be convenient to have a dedicated public mailing list for our goal (which we do have provided from Wikia, but somehow we are not actually using it).

- I look into it ZyMOS 01:25, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
- http://lists.wikia.com/mailman/listinfo/howto-l exists. I am joining as an administrator, and Angela, and some other two participants from stcloudstate.edu and netscape.net are joining. --Inyuki 07:38, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
- I added the link to the mailing list in the Main page's discussion page. --Inyuki 07:56, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Cleaned it up
I think I got your "object" template to work now, by moving it from === to == in each header. The tags at the bottom can't be taken off right now. Our research shows that category tagging is terrifically important for google ranking of your content. Gil (talk) 00:37, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks!
Thanks for the welcome and the clean-up! I've been posting "cross-wikia" links to HowTo from Home occasionally. When you have a howto that would be helpful around the home, it would be great if you wanted to add a link to the howto on an appropriate Home Wikia page. Best wishes! -- CocoaZen 20:12, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
